We were delighted to work with Aigas Field Centre staff today. 🙂
First of all, we learned how beavers are eco-system engineers. We had to work in teams of 4 to create the best dam that we could. 300ml of water was poured towards each one to test it. We discussed why some of our constructions worked much better than others.
Secondly, we had a quick discussion about single use plastics and research that is being done to find environmentally friendly alternatives.
Our third task was to mix a special solution with algae. This produced a slimy bubble. Scientists in the UK are trying to improve this slime mixture, hoping to make “edible” plastic replacements in the future. We were fascinated by the globules that appeared when the substances were combined – a very tactile chemical reaction!
